Patient register, England, 1900-1970
Used at the Brighton County Borough Asylum (later St Francis Psychiatric Hospital), this register was intended to record patient departures, discharges from the hospital, transfers to other hospitals and deaths – an indication of the bureaucracy that was a major element of these institutions. All patient records and histories were recorded by hand, although this example is blank. This book was collected when the hospital closed in 1995 after being open for 136 years. The book was printed by Elsworth Bros Ltd in Leeds, England, who specialised in printing hospital books and forms.
