Machines like this one are used in laboratories to speed up the process of making short lengths of DNA. The DNA produced is used for experimental purposes. This machine was made by Celltech Limited, based in Slough, Berkshire, England, a company which had been established to commercialise discoveries made by molecular biologists working for the Medical Research Council.
